Worst cup exit ever?
I was at Wembley in 1980 and Cardiff in 2006 I can remember Alan Taylors brace, cant quite remember the 64 final but in all my years that must have been the worst FA Cup performance in my lifetime, can anyone prove me wrong with other horror stories. What was the worst one prior to saturdays shambles or was there actually worse?

That 0-4 at West Brom takes some beating, but I'd say that Saturday was even more gutless than that to be honest.

Dunno? Maybe Mansfield Town who beat us 3–0 in the Fifth Round of the 1968–69 FA Cup or Blackpool when Mooro, Clyde Best and Jimmy Greaves blotted their copy book but yes, Wigan has to be up there

Re: Worst cup exit ever?
There have been loads. Torquay in 90 was pretty shit, as was Grimsby and Stockport in 96. Then the pathetic performances against Luton and Oldham in 89 and 90.

Still we had chances in all those games and wanted to win.

I'm going with Saturday. Coming a close second, is the Arsenal game in December. I can take losing, I can't take losing on purpose though.

Actually, for some reason I forgot about Forest. That was horrendous, more so the way he hung those kids out to dry. Then we had the 9-0 League Cup semi defeat just after.

Re: Worst cup exit ever?
OM - I agree, we went up there to lose, but I still wouldn't say the worse due to an under strength side.

The home defeat to Wrexham was a low point.

Re: Worst cup exit ever?
That's a fair point, PD, but in none of those games I doubt we had our Manager basically saying he didn't care about it in the lead up?

Wrexham is a good shout. That was around the TABOR and Brown out stuff, so aggression was pretty high. That was on par I suppose with the after math of Saturdays game.

Swansea in 1999. They were (or were close to) being bottom of the football league.

I honestly felt like murdering that Swan mascot.

Re: Worst cup exit ever?
Easily the worst, for me.

There’s getting beat by plucky underdogs, when they have a great day and you have an off day. One player having the game of his life to settle it. Deflected goals.

However, the precedent was set for this game. We’ve approached every cup game in his short stint in EXACTLY the same way. We were utterly appalling against Shrewsbury, but luckily for us they had no goal threat, and sadly for Moyes we sneaked through. There should never, ever be a time where you go into a game against a team 2 divisions below and be comprehensively outplayed in every department. I don’t care that they were bookies favourites (has that ever been the case before?) what we served up was a disgrace.

He gets no pass for Saturday at all. There was enough there for him to work with, and he threw the game, plain and simple.

wigan or torquay was at both and both disgusting

Re: Worst cup exit ever?
I think Wrexham was last min too.

Moyes didn't care after the game ether. Disgraceful. Thing is we threw the Arse game but then lost at home to a joke Newcastle outfit, so basically they didn't learn anything from that.

BARNSLEY was pretty poor as well, when we went down 1-4.

Forest was absolutely horrendous the other year

Re: Worst cup exit ever?
Torquay was pitiful as was Stockport , both games we played with a full first team and i can't remember having a shot on target against Torquay .
Also remember losing 2-4 to Barnsley after being 2-0 up . Throw in Newport and Wrexham and i doubt if Wigan was the worst

Oldham 6-0 West Ham 1st leg of the semi at that shit hole of a stadium, most depressing drive back from a game ever.

Re: Worst cup exit ever?
1967 Swindon
1969 Mansfield
1970 Middlesbrough
1971 Blackpool
1973 Hull
1974 Hereford
1990 Torquay
1997 Wrexham
1999 Swansea

All with full strength elevens

2014 Nottingham Forest ( 5-0 and live on BBC )

So is Wigan the worse? No fucking way.

One McAvennieeeeee 5:58 Mon Jan 29
Re: Worst cup exit ever?
We tried to win all those games.

So yeah, Wigan is the worst.

Re: Worst cup exit ever?
Torquay was pretty awful as we had a pretty decent side at the time. I mean Torquay ffs, seaside town side in the West country usually somewhere round the bottom of the league

Getting thrashed by Mansfield was probably the worst though. I can't imagine how our travelling fans must have felt! I was in my 1st year at university in Cardiff, in the sick bay with a really bad throat infection when the result came through. The Welsh guy in the next bed never stopped taking the piss but I was just too ill to fight back!
